Visit from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service
Following on from our topic of 'Where I Live', we started to explore who helps us in our daily life through learning about 'People Who Help Us.'
We thought about the buildings we walked past on our Shankill Road walk and discussed how shop assistants, librarians, opticians, doctors and dentists all support us. During Play Based Learning, we set up a hospital where pupils engaged with the role of doctor or nurse. Then we set up a fire station and discussed how we can keep ourselves and our household safe by making simple checks. The Fire Service came to school with their fire engine and showed us the equipment and uniform they wear to help others and keep themselves safe.
Some top preventative tips:
1. Thumbs up for....Friday!
Get into a habit of checking your smoke alarm every Friday. It is so reassuring to know that there is a working smoke alarm to alert everyone in an emergency.
2. Blow out candles and keep matches etc. away from children and flammable objects
3. Have a plan in case of an emergency. Know your house number and postcode.
4. If there is an emergency, ring 999 and tell the operator as much as you know.
Check out the photos of the visit from the Fire Service. The visit coincided with Bedtime Stories Day so we had the most wonderful day meeting local fire fighters and then shared our favourite stories while drinking hot chocolate and eating cookies.
